Chapter 32

The next morning after breakfast and with their luggage already stuffed in the back of the car, the four of them stood in the driveway exchanging hugs and saying good-bye to each other.

“Thank you so much for everything, Ms.- I mean, Aunt Helen,” said Emma.

“Yes, Aunt Helen. Thank you,” said Jade. “I’m sorry that we ended up crashing and leaving you with that mess in the kitchen. I really wanted to stay up and talked with you some more, but I was just so tired. I think I fell asleep before my head hit the pillow.”

Aunt Helen smiled at Jade. “Heaven’s, don’t give it another thought. Savannah and I managed it. Besides, it gave us a chance to get to know each other a little better.” She threw Savannah a subtle wink. “You girls sure you got everything? You didn’t leave anything behind, did you?”

Savannah patted her purse. “No, Aunt Helen, we got it all.” She threw her arms around her aunt and whispered in her ear. “Thank you so much for everything. I love you.”

Aunt Helen whispered back, “I love you, too, dear. Be careful and keep me posted.”

“I will. I promise.”

By the time they released each other, Jade had already climbed into the back seat and Emma behind the wheel, leaving the front seat for Savannah.

As they pulled out of the driveway, Savannah rolled down her window, blew Aunt Helen a kiss and waved good-bye. When the gestures were returned, Savannah heard her aunt’s voice in her head. Be careful, sweet girl. And trust your instincts.

Savannah gave her a subtle nod and watched her until they turned the corner. When she could no longer see her aunt, Savannah discretely wiped a tear from her cheek and turned back around in her seat.

“Your aunt is really nice,” said Jade.

Emma agreed. “Yeah. I would have liked to spend more time with her, but it was like I had been drugged. Just like Jade, I couldn’t keep my eyes open either.”

Savannah wondered if maybe her ancient ancestors had something to do with that, giving her the opportunity to talk with her aunt. If her friends had decided to stay up, or if she hadn’t gone back into the kitchen, she would have never known about her family secret.

She thought about everything her aunt had told her regarding her mother and the special item tucked safely away in her purse. She thought about all of the things that had happened to her as of late: the dreams, the visions, the instant ability to read tarot cards. Now it all made sense. She knew exactly why these things were happening to her — because she was a true psychic.

“It’s okay,” said Savannah, “I enjoyed helping her. Then we went into the living room and had the most interesting conversation.”

“So what did you talk about?” asked Emma as they continued on Interstate 80 toward Elko, Nevada.

Savannah reached for her purse down on the floorboard, pulled out the box with the cards and began telling them about her family history.
